9 Digital Marketing Tips To Instantly Help Your Service Business

By Jonathon Ortiz - March 8th, 2020

Did you know that 3.2 billion people in the world own a smartphone in 2019 and An average smartphone user has 63 interactions on his/her phone a day.

Those facts are staggering and it’s only going to grow larger as new technology like 5G rolls in and messes with everything.

So with the imminent growth of the internet and the digital age the small business owner who has a limited budget for marketing and promotion must QUICKLY adapt.

Most major companies are spending millions in advertising, retargeting, video marketing and production. The little guy trying to make money to feed their family is left with being innovative and relying on hitting the pavement everyday.

Let’s get started on how your service business can compete in the online world.

1. SEO

Have you checked where your website ranks on Google or other Search Engines? You need to have a good understanding of the customer’s perspective in potentially seeing your website online. First audit your website!

I do recommend all businesses having Google Analytics, Google Search Console and other SEO tools set up for your website; now there is something you can do if you have no experience with SEO.

Get to know your website’s SEO by using a tool like SEOptimer.

All you do is enter your websites URL and you get a Free Website Analysis. This is the first step to understanding how you can potentially self teach yourself or hire a company. At the very least you know the needs of your website.

If you do have some basic understanding of your website builder ensure these are laser focused:

  • H1 Title Tags
  • Site Identity and SERP listings
  • XML Sitemap is present
  • Include plenty of internal links
  • Optimize your Copy and Keywords

It’s incredibly important to have a general idea of your SEO ranking and performance. The internet that gives us businesses the most headaches for promoting our website but also has answers for SEO ranking and tutorials to help us. So utilize your time if you don’t have the budget for a SEO expert right now. This, as you know, is the hustle of having a business.

2. Google MyBusiness

Google Search:

Do these keyword phrases look familiar to you? You have probably used a phrase similar to this when looking for services near your area.

Google is by far the most used search engine in the world and in the United States with 92.18 percent of the worldwide market share.

So now that we know that Google will continue taking over the world one day let’s continue and talk business. Although Google owns the Search Engine market by a landslide we can capitalize on this fact by creating a Google MyBusiness.

If we can take anything from Google DOMINATING the search engine market is that being on their listing is mega important.

Just making an account isn’t the end of the road. Google will pull its weight in getting you to appear in search but you must tactically describe your business and services offered. Ensure that the service area is clear and not over or understated. Also having relevant photos and videos will help your customers gain trust and interest.

Use the Post and Offer feature to freshly engage with customers that are casually browsing.

All of this won’t take much of your time. Dedicate 5-10 minutes/week formulating and posting to GMB and that’s it! Watch as your appearance in search begins to improve, along with enacting the other 7 tips!

3. Facebook Page and Groups

If you have seen cable TV lately, then you have probably seen Facebook really promoting Facebook Groups.

The reason being is up for speculation because we are not in their strategy room. The hint we can take from this is that a big marketing budget to promote something means that it must be a focus of the company. Let’s take advantage of the underpriced or free attention that Facebook is offering.

Create a Facebook Page

Fill out every information box that you can and choose the right Facebook business template for your particular business.

Remember Facebook is still the most popular Social Media platform. Every business should create a Facebook page for their business. Its growing importance in business functions these days is super valuable to brand awareness and consideration.

Facebook offers features like Events, Groups, Search, and more.

For Facebook groups, you have two options. Create a FB group or join one! Join the conversation or spark industry related questions with the community. There is a Facebook page for just about everything known to man.

Again, hitting the pavement…online.

4. Keyword Research

This one is so important, yet under utilized by many small businesses.

Every business needs to know the Keywords that are existing and emerging in the industry. The internet and the questions are ever changing. As a business, we must adapt to this constant change.

This isn’t something to be afraid of but rather proactive about. Use tools like Google Adwords Keyword Planner Tool. This free tool will help you pinpoint the Keywords specific to your industry.

“What do we do with these fancy Keywords??“

Make content around these keywords on blog posts, site pages, social and in community forums.

Disclaimer: You must start a blog, it’s not really an option anymore. The only exception is if you have the time to do Youtube videos to drive traffic and search rankings. Start a Blog.

The more you know about the questions being asked or the chatter in the industry the better. This is getting to know your customers online and how they use search engines.

Another great tool is Keyword Everywhere.

It’s a Chrome plugin that is a sidebar when you use Search.

Find the Keywords specific to your business, and make content around these specific phrases and words.

5. Buyer Persona and Buyer Journey

(Focus on your target audience. Focus on your Niche. Ideal customer. Who are you selling to?)

If you have never heard of Buyer Persona or Buyer Journey you are not alone. It just sounds like fancy business lingo that marketers use to sound like they know what they are doing.

While that’s not entirely false… It’s the basis of your entire marketing operation/campaign.

Let’s textbook define:

A buyer persona is a semi-fictional representation of your ideal customer based on market research and real data about your existing customers.

The buyer’s journey is the process buyers go through to become aware of, consider and evaluate, and decide to purchase a new product or service.

So what does that mean?

When creating your company’s buyer personas you create the ideal customers that you are trying to provide service to. This way you have a clear understanding of how you can create strategy around that persona and their interests and realities.

Creating a buyer persona is common practice with major companies that understand the importance of staying true to their customer.

Buyer Journey is important to map out the stages of your consumer.

In the process of creating this journey you will use intuition, experience, research and maybe testimonials. This information put together should give you a better understanding of where to spend more or less time when marketing your business.

If you are a tree service company and know that your customer probably will not find you on Twitter, but rather Pinterest then you can be more strategic with your time and effort.

Creating a buyer persona and buyer journey saves you time and money. It’s extremely important for a business that is serious about their brand and online presence.

6. Build Email List

Even in 2020, email campaigns could go a long way to helping your business grow.

Use free tools like Mailchimp that allows you up to 1000 contacts on their free tier plan. Begin to reach your customers; and leads by building that list up with every interaction in your business. Prospecting, consideration, review stage, and more.

Landing page is required when building an email list. Create the funnel process for your prospects to reach the objective of obtaining their email address.

If your potential customer leaves an email, more than likely they are interested in your offering. Nurture this interest, have a planned out email campaign tailored to your buyer persona and their journey.

The main resource for your landing page design and your service offer is your Buyer Persona. Use this to create the strategy and tactics for acquiring new business.

An email list isn’t easy to grow but once established it will effectively help you convert your leads/prospects to paying customers. See here for more information on Email Marketing in 2020.

7. Attend local Networking Events

(CLICK BAIT. This isn’t a Digital Marketing tip!)

Digital Marketing is becoming increasingly important in 2020. We are all busy and rely on our mobile and the internet to solve our problems. Yes, digital marketing is important but so is face to face interactions.

Use Facebook Events and Google Search to find events near you, related to your industry. You can build a strong contact list and increase website traffic with physically attending and networking with your community.

Search free networking events in your area. I guarantee the same day you check there’s an event going on.

Exchange business cards and share your story.

8. Engage with your audience (Social Media)

So hopefully you have already created Social Media accounts relative to your business goals. This is one the most powerful tools on this list with the support of the other tips.

According to Pew Research Center, over half of U.S. Facebook users are visiting Facebook several times a day.

You may have found this blog via Facebook.

Create a Content Calendar for Social Media channels!

It sounds daunting but it’s worth the work put in for your business.

An engaged audience and the nurturing of your superfans will create an organic brand awareness effect that works when you are sleeping.

Use Facebook’s Creator Studio for your business page to plan and post content to Facebook and to Instagram.

You can create 3 posts per week to get started.

BUT.

Remember that you need to follow your handy dandy Buyer Persona and journey. That is why it’s vital that you create a strong buyer persona from the start to then market your business effectively.

Content ideas:

  • Thoughts on your industry
  • Reviews
  • Photography of your business (my favorite)
  • Infographics from other blogs about your service
  • Short informative videos
  • Accomplishments

A photo can tell the whole story but adding a creative caption that works together to deliver a message is one of the most powerful tools when using social media.

Learn the basics of photography. It’s not an option anymore for small businesses because your competitor will have creative pictures that will have your potential customers overlooking you.

Look at what Gary Vee has done for us marketers and the little guys! Content ideas for days!

9. Share your story!

Your strength is derived from your story. Share it with us!

We are people at the other end of that profile picture or blog post. Remember to treat each interaction online with the care you would in person.

Nobody can tell your story as well as you. Use social media, networking events, copywriting, multimedia and more to tell your story in a holistic way.

Storytelling is an invaluable strategy to any marketing campaign. As a small business owner you have the ability to relate to your clients with your struggles, successes, bumps in the road, rewards, milestones and everything in between.

We as consumers like to buy from people we can relate to, services that have a smile and our thoughts and concerns in mind. Being empathetic can go a long way to storytelling and getting better connected with your customers.

Go and tell your story using all of these tips. Inspire your employees and customers with the passion that got you started.

Halloween Defining the Process of Getting Old

By Sean Thomas - October 31st, 2019

Halloween origins date back thousands of years to the Celts. Holiday traditions such as trick-or-treating and costume parties were non-existent. However, the Celts eventually were overtaken by the Romans, the Romans could not prevent the spread of Christianity, and thus, the Halloween with creepy costumes, haunted houses and horrific “old-people candy” was created.

As a kid, getting to dress up as Stone Cold Steve Austin or the Grim Reaper, devouring a plethora of candy and watching “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” gave me something more to look forward to than cooler weather. However, just as Summer turns to Fall, time changes all and Halloween would begin to change forever.

Going into my teenage years, I would still trick-or-treat, but Halloween was evolving. One of the downsides of being the eldest sibling was that I was often responsible for accompanying my younger siblings. Aside from the fact that I didn’t want to bear the weight of this responsibility, I made sure to take advantage and fill up on the goodies. Even though my bag of candy would often spew over like a witch’s cauldron, I still preferred doing more tricking and less treating.

Getting into my adulthood, Halloween became focused on being with my friends. I would still take the younger family members out into the Night of the Living Dead, but I began leaving my candy bag at home. Instead, once I had completed my trick-or-treat duties, I’d fill my candy bag full of beer and make my way from one Halloween party to the next.

Surprisingly, my costumes were much better as an adult. From Joe Cool to Haku, a character in the animated film Spirited Away, my fiancée and I have always had a plan for our costumes and engagements for Halloween.

Unfortunately, in the last couple of years, Halloween has turned into last second costumes and passing out candy. Some of my old Halloween traditions have faded, but I still dress up, I’m just not haunting the streets or attending spooky parties. No longer can I run door-to-door shrieking “trick-or-treat” either. I suppose I could, but I’m not sure how many people would give candy to a fully bearded Batman.

Halloween falls on a Thursday this year, and due to my commitments, the holiday will be celebrated the same as last year. My fiancée and I do not have costumes yet, we’re still thinking of carving out a pumpkin and of course, we can’t forget to grab a bag of candy. Oh, and I still have to see when Snoopy is coming on too.

Reminiscing about Halloween has helped me realize how valuable our time is. The inevitable changes we experience from childhood to adulthood are highlighted no better than when we reflect on holiday memories. In my reflection, Halloween stands alone as the greatest separation from my childhood to adulthood. Trick-or-Treating became something more terrifying, paying bills and cooking for myself, my mom stopped picking out my candies. Even then, I still love Halloween, and no age restriction can change that.

5 Ways Social Media Impacts Your Personal Image

By Sean Thomas - October 14th, 2019

We live in a world dominated by social media. From the glory days of Myspace to the modern-day marvels of Twitter and Tik Tok, being on social media has been a driving force in expanding your “circle of influence”. Rather you choose to use social media platforms for business or pleasure, here are five reasons I believe social media is an important factor in creating personal image.

1. HONEST PERSONAL BRANDING

Often, I feel that many individuals utilize social media as a pretense to the individuals they truly are. Seeing one person’s lifestyle on Facebook or Instagram doesn’t always depict who that individual is. I value those who show their true selves on social media as they would in person. The person you advertise yourself as on social media reflects on who you are as an individual. Your brand starts with showing your “true colors”, and false presentation on social media can reflect poorly on your brand. By being true to yourself, you are being true to others!

2. #FreeAdvertisement

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok, Vine (RIP), Linkedin, et cetera. Each of these social platforms is free to download and free to create an account. Sure, you can pay for advertisements, but the cost of a hashtag is free. Hitting the right hashtag at the right time can bring you tons of followers and attention to your social media page.

3. Global Connections

Speaking of hashtags, the utilization of an appropriate hashtag can connect you to individuals around the world. A fitness page in Texas can use the hashtag #motivation and can be seen and shared by a fitness page in the UK. Making connections like these are an incredible way to make new friends and connect to like-minded individuals from all over the globe.

4. A Place of Expression

There are many negative features associated with social media, such as cyberbullying. This has led to platforms like Instagram to test hiding ‘Likes’ on posts. I do believe this creates a healthier social media environment for individuals. The most important factor here is that individuals will be able to grow their brand by their content versus how many likes their page or posts receive. Fearless expression helps promote an honest image of yourself to your followers.

5. Career Networking

I often say that the world revolves around the idea that it’s not always about what you know, but rather who you know. Connecting on social media with individuals who have similar interests, both in hobby and career, can be extremely beneficial to those out on the job hunt. If your hobbies involve “turning up”, it may be better to leave those posts in your phone gallery.

Gratitude Will Take You There

By Sean Thomas - September 30th, 2019

I wake up every morning and the first words that come to mind are “thank you”. The phrase is directed at no object or individual, but rather unto the world around me. No matter what challenges the universe may be creating, this simple expression of gratitude allows me an opportunity to start the day positively.

This habit began after a string of events in 2017. After experiencing various health ailments, I found myself hospitalized for four days. The diagnosis was diabetes and my life was about to change forever. I was bewildered by this news and my lack of health insurance only created a sense of fear that I would succumb to the disease much quicker than most.

On the second night of my stay in that cold and intolerable hospital room, I found myself questioning everything in my life. These thoughts ran from personal decisions such as why I hadn’t begun pursuing a college degree and stretched as far as my belief in God.

Sean Thomas

Current attending Texas A&M University

These rampant thoughts eventually brought me to tears, as I failed to find the answers I was searching for. In my heart, however, I knew that I needed to make drastic changes in my life. But where was I to begin? The lack of any education beyond a high school diploma limited my job opportunities and I felt I had worn myself thin in eight years of work experience by way of both retail work and the food industry.

I worked every type of job you could imagine; from ice cream scooper to various management roles, though all were met with a dead end. My work experience was extensive, but I would be foolish to believe it would give me leverage into a career. The soul search abruptly came to an end, and as I dozed, I dreamt of a future beyond imagination.

When I woke the following day, there was a sense of realization that I was about to embark on a new journey. No longer could I sit idly waiting for the world to hand me a favor; if I wanted something, I had to take it. This was my life, I was ready to take my place in the world and overcome the obstacles and failures that for so long tied me down.

Google was my best friend during these four days in the hospital. Searching high and low for diabetes cures was often met with disappointment and eventually led me on the search for a career that I hoped would quickly turn my misfortune around. I found that career, or so I thought, and the day after leaving the hospital signed up for online course work in the field of real estate.

Though there were plenty of horror stories about the career field, the money signs ran through my mind like a child counting sheep to fall asleep. I felt that this was my big-ticket and began planning for my future of selling homes being the end goal. Until that time, however, I planned to continue working as a server in the restaurant I was currently employed by.

Then another turn for the worse, my fiancée found herself in the hospital and needed surgery. That same weekend, the restaurant abruptly closed down. The new world I was creating for myself began to crumble and with the walls caving in, I began to again crumble with it.

A few days after her release from the hospital, my focus immediately centered on completing my real estate course work. I worked tirelessly for hours a day, reading everything I could to motivate me to push through the exhaustive materials. Then, one day, as I was searching for motivation, I stumbled across a book that would change my life forever.

The book was one I had heard of but gave very little thought to. Titled “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne, is a self-help book, one focused on the concept of “ask, and you shall receive”. I couldn’t take the book in the literal sense, but the message written throughout its pages was clear; if I hoped to find happiness in my life, then I must be grateful for the things I already had.

Its message is assuredly misconstrued by many, but I knew to look beyond what the critics and proponents had to say and must create my own ideas from its 198 pages. Messages of living a positive lifestyle and being thankful spoke to me in a way that many books and people, including the Bible, could not. This is not to discredit religion by any means, nor is it to discredit those around me. Simply put, I wanted to find my way without the influence of those who were not living my life.

Within its pages, a contributor to the book by the name of James Ray introduced me to the idea of saying thank you each morning. From there I began researching others who implemented the practices of The Secret. From Oprah Winfrey to Jack Canfield (co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul Books), I found that many individuals around the world followed this practice. If successful individuals believed this concept to be beneficial to their success, why wouldn’t I at least give it a shot?

So, I did and in January 2018 I began my college journey at Northwest Vista College. It was a long time coming, but it was the only option I believed could truly change my life. I went on to complete my real estate licensing and practiced for a few months with an incredible local group known as Xsellence Realty, but I still wanted more.

My time with Xsellence was brief, as my school commitments began to outweigh my work commitments. I was involved with Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society on campus as a leadership coach. I involved myself with a group known as Men of Vista Engage, as well as being extremely active in the classroom setting with my peers. Work became secondary as my primary focus was on being a student, a decision I will never regret.

After a year and a half at Northwest Vista, I completed my associate’s degree in business. I applied to one university, a decision many said was foolish, though I was receiving letters from schools across the country. I got to this point on my own decision making, so I ignored the criticism and was eventually accepted to my dream school.

That school? Texas A&M University, specifically to Mays Business School. This new journey has been challenging at times, but the simple expression of gratitude each morning allows me to realize that no matter the obstacle, I can and will overcome all of them.

I am fearless, I am confident, and I am hopeful; but above all, I am thankful.

Your Personal Brand and How to Find It

By Ilissa Davis - September 30th, 2019

Figuring out who you are as a brand and finding your own unique voice among a sea of hot-shots can be incredibly overwhelming. This can be especially true if you are just starting out and have a frightening amount of competition lurking in the depths of the media; competition that is established and trusted among your target audience. Your target audience that has yet to give your material the eyes and ears it deserves.

However intimidating this task may be, it is going to be the most rewarding in the long run. Your personal brand is the heart of your work and will always be a safe place to keep you grounded when business becomes stressful—and trust me—it will.

The good news is, you are way more equipped at pinpointing your personal brand than you think. You are searching for this article because you’re a talented individual with skills unlike your peers, and you’ve already ignited the most important tool: hunger. Grab your favorite pen, a piece of paper, and answer the following questions:

Who Are Your Audience?
Your audience, your fans—the people who will fuel your business and drive you to the top of the chain. Who are they? If you are a local Café near a university, maybe your audience are college students between the ages of 18 – 23 looking for a place to study and are also on a tight budget. If you are a fitness blogger, your audience might be health-conscious Instagrammers that need workout motivation and diet tips in their feed. It’s important to be specific and not too broad, because if you can find your appropriate niche, then you can study them more specifically.

The goal is to know your audience and know them freakishly well.

What is Your Brand’s Voice?
Every established business has a voice that is usually communicated through its mission statement, core values, and vision. Amazon’s voice is spoken through their mission statement, which is: “to be earth’s most customer-centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online.” Simple, clearly stated, attainable and most importantly—true.

Your voice will create trust between you and your audience and will underline how they will expect to be treated. Do not claim to be “customer-centric” and then turn around and point fingers at the consumer when a situation gets sticky. Your public reviews will back up whether your brand’s voice matches the actual reality of your tone and steer future business to you, or to your competition. Be wary of the differences between how you say your business operates and how it does operate.

What is Your Talent?
Have faith in yourself; you are talented. It’s so easy to get discouraged in a reality where negativity, judgement and harsh criticism is effortlessly thrown out into the universe and public for you and your fans to see. We see this on every social media platform’s comment section, on blog posts, and hear it from the mouths of dissatisfied individuals during coffee breaks. While it is the reality and it’s not a matter of ‘if’ it will happen, but ‘when’, do not let it destroy your passion. I can’t stress enough how important it is to remember that you are an asset to your brand, and you can create amazing work that is undeniably better than your competition’s.

Whether you are a blogger, product engineer, store owner, or a marketing guru, keep your earliest works and the ones you are most proud of nearby. Turn to the work you have curated that has made you most proud in the past and remember that you are the genius that made that piece of art. You have a specific talent and do not forget that it’s still there, even if it’s buried under stress, frustration, and road blocks.

What is Bexar Media?

By Jonathon Ortiz - September 30th, 2019

Where are you reading this? On a mobile device most likely or perhaps a desktop, right? Regardless of where you may be reading this you are getting information through a device with a screen. Think about how we learn so much from these devices and function as humans with these smart devices. Our generation has been exposed to arguably the greatest invention in human history. The invention of the internet at our fingertips has opened up a can of worms that is the wild, wild internet. We are exposed to much more brands, much more hate, much more gossip and the list goes on.

Do you feel the internet is bad?

Is it bad for our kids?

These are the questions we ask now because we are seeing the repercussions of all this information, good or bad, flying so fast. How do we fight back the hate and the parts of this space that we don’t want? How do we stand out in this place that gives us the power to learn and grow? Bexar Media is on a mission to learn more and share how we adapt to today’s age. We are answering the questions of how to stand out as a brand while acknowledging the stigma the internet is creating or happiness its creating. Here at Bexar Media we ask “why?” to everything we are not sure of. We ask this to have an open mind to learn through empathy to reach a goal that we can all agree on.

Digital Marketing

Oh and we offer Digital Marketing Services such as Web Design, Web Development, Social Media Management and Content Creation to name a few. All of these services are based with positivity in mind and empathy learning. We understand that talent and creative are crucial to success but also customer centric solutions must be formed with knowledge of the target audience. Bexar Media will work hard to make a difference one small business at a time.
